The County Kilkenny grassland area of Littleton Park, located between Ballymahon and Athlone, staged races on Monday 16th September 1844. The mile and a half course, with 4 fences and a 3 ½ foot hurdle, was on the Park and the meeting was organised by Mr J T Hogan. A large crowd from Ballymahon, Athlone and Moate thronged the course and were rewarded with an exciting day at the races. In the first race Mr Ganley’s Brown Fanny beat Staply and Woollen Wheel, while the feature race, the Littleton Stakes, went to Mr Thomas Ganley’s All Around My Hat. There is no evidence of further meetings taking place on the Park. |
